LNG offtake is dependent on demand, which is rarely consistent. Since a part of the LNG boils off each day inside the tanks, when the terminal isn't delivering enough LNG to either vessels or vaporizers to balance this effect, Boil-Off Gas builds up inside the tanks.
As a safety precaution to prevent damaging tanks from overpressurization as the LNG boils off, LNG terminals will burn this excess Boil-Off Gas in various methods, effectively wasting the energy the gas contains.
Low ambient temperatures make it unfeasible to utilize ambient air or open rack vaporizers. Often in these instances, gas is burned to heat either a water bath or to generate steam, either of which is used to heat the LNG, which leads to gas losses as fuel.
Large data centers often struggle to secure enough reliable grid power. Many projects are delayed or cancelled because utilitiels cannot provide 50MW - 2GW of capacity quickly enough.
